For many, Christmas is about family, joy, togetherness, and traditions. And that’s beautiful—but it’s not everyone’s reality. Not everyone has a family. Not everyone feels joyful this time of year. And not everyone chooses to, or can, celebrate Christmas in the “traditional” way that’s plastered all over social media and commercials.
Christmas Is Just Another Day—You Decide What to Do
The truth is, we live in a diverse world, and that diversity extends far beyond race, culture, or religion. It includes the way we experience holidays like Christmas. For some, it’s the highlight of the year, full of decorations, presents, and family meals. For others, it’s just another day—or, perhaps, a day they’d rather skip altogether. And that’s perfectly okay.
If you love every sparkly, festive moment, fantastic! But if you’d rather use the day to rest, catch up on work, or enjoy your favorite hobby, that’s equally valid. The idea that there’s only one way to enjoy Christmas feels not just limiting but downright unfair.
The Whole ‘Togetherness’ Thing Is Overrated
Don’t get me wrong—I love all the decorations and the adverts with families gathered around glittering trees, or Santa doing his thing. It’s cute, it’s cozy, and I can see why people love it. But where are the photos of the ones who’ll be studying? Where’s the encouragement for using this time to learn something new or do something productive?
Why is it so taboo to say that having some space might be exactly what you need?
This holiday season, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing—spending time catching up on my artwork, sketching, testing new ideas for Mini Gabi World, and maybe taking an online course or two. Honestly, I’m looking forward to it more than I can say.
The idea that you have to be surrounded by others to enjoy the holidays feels... outdated. Creating your own joy, in your own way, might just be the best gift you can give yourself.
A Celebration of All Choices
So, this year, I want to celebrate everyone’s choices. Whether you love the Christmas gnomes or couldn’t care less, whether you’re spending the day with loved ones or spending it solo, whether you celebrate Christmas or don’t celebrate anything at all—you are seen, and you are valid.
If you’re alone and feeling unrepresented, know that there are many of us who are alone by choice or not, and we don’t need this constant rubbing in our face that we don’t have others around.
Let’s embrace the diversity of how we live, rest, and find happiness, not just during the holidays but every day. And let’s remember: it’s okay to do Christmas your way—or not at all.
Mini Gabi World: Inspired by Diversity
Mini Gabi World is my multimedia wonderland art brand. At its heart is Mini Gabi, a girl who got tired of not belonging anywhere. So, in true introvert fashion, she did what any of us would do (if we had the imagination and questionable sanity): she created her own world.
It was supposed to be perfect—a peaceful, quiet haven where she could just be herself. But, of course, life (and world-building) had other plans. Before she could enjoy her solitude, graffiti invasions started to occur everywhere, a weird mansion appeared, misfit squatters moved in, and ghost landlords started charging them rent. Mini Gabi found herself hosting an eccentric crew she never signed up for.
So much for peace and quiet.
But that’s the magic of Mini Gabi World. It’s not just a place for people who feel like they don’t belong—it’s also a reminder that even the most carefully crafted worlds can surprise us, and sometimes the messiest, most unexpected moments turn out to be the best parts of the story.
If you’re curious to see more of Mini Gabi World—its art, its stories, animations, and all the quirky characters—have a look here. They’ll welcome you into their world.
A Poem for All of Us—Whatever We’re Doing
For the ones that celebrate, and the ones that escape,
For the ones that eat cake, and the ones that eat… even more cake,
For the ones who believe in Santa, and the ones who believe in naps,
For the ones who fill the garden with Christmas gnomes, and the ones who wish those gnomes would just go back to wherever they came from,
For the ones who look forward to a new round of "All I Want for Christmas Is You," and the ones who just want that song to stop… forever…
To all my fellow misfits, dreamers, and quiet rebels out there: Happy Whatever You’re Doing!
Celebrating the Holidays Your Own Way!
